HCL Technologies has completed the purchase of a 10.46 percent stake in Sarvam AI, taking a significant minority position in one of India’s most closely watched artificial intelligence startups.
Sarvam AI is among the domestic firms building large language models tailored to Indian languages and use cases, an area that has attracted growing attention as global demand for generative AI tools accelerates. The investment positions HCLTech, one of India’s largest information technology services exporters, deeper into the emerging domestic AI ecosystem.
For HCLTech, the move offers exposure to homegrown model development at a time when enterprise clients are seeking to embed AI capabilities into their operations. Strategic minority stakes allow established IT firms to access innovation and talent without the integration burden of a full acquisition.
Sarvam AI was selected earlier as part of national efforts to build sovereign AI capability, reflecting policy interest in reducing dependence on foreign models. The startup has focused on multilingual systems suited to India’s diverse linguistic landscape.
The transaction adds to a broader trend of large corporates backing Indian AI ventures, signalling confidence that local players can compete in a field dominated by well-funded international laboratories. Financial terms of the stake purchase were not detailed in the announcement.
