India’s Green Urea Roadmap to Promote Sustainable Fertilizer Production Announced by Government

The Government of India has unveiled a roadmap to promote green urea, aiming to shift fertilizer production toward more sustainable processes and reduce reliance on conventional, high-emission manufacturing.

Urea is among the most widely used fertilizers in Indian agriculture, and its production is energy-intensive, traditionally dependent on natural gas. The roadmap envisions adopting cleaner methods, including the use of green hydrogen, to lower the carbon footprint of fertilizer manufacturing.

The initiative aligns with broader national goals to cut emissions and build domestic capacity in green technologies. By targeting one of the most carbon-intensive industrial processes, the government aims to make a meaningful contribution to its climate commitments while supporting agricultural needs.

Fertilizer production and supply are strategically important given their role in food security, and India has long balanced affordability for farmers with the cost of imports and subsidies. A transition to greener processes could, over time, reduce dependence on imported feedstock.

Implementation is expected to involve coordination between government agencies, fertilizer producers and developers of green hydrogen, with the roadmap setting the direction for a phased transition in the sector.
