US Supreme Court Rules 6-3 That President Has Unreviewable Power to End Temporary Protected Status

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the president holds authority to terminate Temporary Protected Status that is not subject to review by the courts, handing the Trump administration a significant immigration victory.

The decision, split along ideological lines with the conservative majority in control, clears the way for the administration to end deportation protections for nationals of several countries, including Haitians and Syrians.

Temporary Protected Status allows people from designated countries affected by armed conflict, natural disasters or other extraordinary conditions to live and work legally in the United States for limited, renewable periods. The designation does not provide a path to permanent residency.

By placing termination decisions beyond judicial review, the ruling limits the ability of affected immigrants and advocacy groups to challenge the removal of protections in court. Immigrant rights organizations warned the decision could expose hundreds of thousands of long-term residents to deportation.
