India’s Southwest Monsoon Coverage Remains Delayed With 75% of Country Facing Rainfall Deficit in June

The southwest monsoon’s advance over India has remained delayed, with a large part of the country recording a rainfall deficit through June.

Data from the India Meteorological Department indicates that most of the country has received rainfall 20 percent or more below normal so far in the month. The monsoon’s progress has lagged significantly behind its usual schedule.

A delayed and deficient monsoon raises concerns for agriculture, water reservoirs and overall economic activity, given the dependence of farming and rural incomes on timely rains.

Forecasters continue to monitor the monsoon’s movement closely, as the pace of its advance in the coming weeks will be critical in determining whether the early shortfall is offset later in the season.
