India’s Unified Payments Interface has been integrated into payment systems across 12 countries, marking a global milestone for the digital payments platform as transaction volumes continue to surge.
The expansion allows UPI-based transactions to be used in a growing number of international markets, extending the reach of a payment system that has become central to India’s domestic digital economy. The milestone reflects ongoing efforts by Indian authorities and financial institutions to promote UPI as a cross-border payment option.
Officials have not detailed which additional countries may be next in line for UPI integration, though the platform’s international expansion has continued steadily in recent years.
The National Payments Corporation of India has worked with partner countries’ financial regulators to enable UPI acceptance abroad, a process that typically involves integration with local payment rails and regulatory approval in each market.
