The green transportation project, being executed under the ‘Hydrogen for Heritage’ national initiative, aims to replace legacy diesel-powered passenger rakes with zero-emission hydrogen fuel-cell propulsion units across eco-sensitive mountain railways and suburban heritage corridors. The pilot rake, designed and assembled at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai in collaboration with international fuel-cell technology partners, completed static electrical integration tests over the weekend.
Railway mechanical engineers confirmed that the specialized traction system combines rooftop hydrogen fuel-cell stacks with high-capacity lithium-ion battery banks to deliver robust acceleration on steep track gradients. The only operational exhaust emitted during high-speed runs is pure water vapor, eliminating particulate matter and sulfur emissions in fragile mountain valleys.
Dedicated hydrogen generation and high-pressure refueling depots are nearing physical completion along the historic Kalka-Shimla, Nilgiri Mountain, and Darjeeling Himalayan railway corridors. Specialized safety protocols and cryogenic refueling safety buffers have been validated by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation to ensure foolproof passenger safety.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that adopting hydrogen traction positions India among a select group of advanced nations developing commercial hydrogen passenger transport. Commercial passenger trial runs on the Jind-Sonipat demonstration section in Haryana are scheduled to commence by November.
