Cheetah CCB-2 from Botswana released at Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary to expand India’s cheetah reintroduction

In a major milestone for India’s ambitious Project Cheetah, a healthy female cheetah translocated from Botswana, identified as CCB-2, was officially released into a soft-release acclimation boma at the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav ceremonially opened the enclosure gates alongside senior wildlife biologists and National Tiger Conservation Authority officials.

With this release, CCB-2 becomes the fourth feline inhabiting the expansive grasslands of Gandhi Sagar, establishing a vital secondary habitat intended to reduce territorial overcrowding at Kuno National Park. Veterinary teams equipped the big cat with a satellite tracking collar to monitor her movement patterns, predatory instincts, and adaptation to the local semi-arid landscape.

Wildlife scientists expressed confidence that the abundant prey base and expansive open savanna ecosystem of Gandhi Sagar provide ideal conditions for establishing a self-sustaining wild cheetah population. Forest department authorities affirmed that local tribal communities have been integrated into eco-development committees to support continuous monitoring and ensure peaceful coexistence.
