Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav releases two captive-bred Great Indian Bustards into wild in Thar

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav presided over a landmark wildlife conservation milestone on October 5, 2026, formally releasing two captive-bred male Great Indian Bustards into the wild at Desert National Park in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The historic reintroduction marks the first time that birds bred under the specialized national captive breeding facility at Sam have been reintroduced into their natural grassland ecosystem.

Both bustards were fitted with miniaturized, solar-powered GPS telemetry transmitters to enable wildlife biologists and field trackers to monitor their foraging movements, habitat adaptation, and social interactions with surviving wild populations around the clock. The Great Indian Bustard remains one of the world’s most critically endangered avian species, with wild populations reduced to fewer than one hundred and fifty individuals primarily concentrated in the Thar Desert.

Addressing wildlife scientists and local pastoralist communities, Yadav reiterated the government’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding grassland habitats and undergrounding hazardous high-voltage power transmission lines that pose collision risks. Conservationists praised the successful release as a triumph of scientific captive management, expressing hope that regular releases will rescue the majestic flagship species from the brink of extinction.
