Statistics Ministry survey finds only 9% of Indian workers rely primarily on public transport

A comprehensive nationwide mobility survey conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation revealed that merely nine percent of the Indian workforce relies primarily on municipal buses, suburban trains, or metro networks for daily commuting. In sharp contrast, motorized two-wheelers emerge as the overwhelmingly dominant commuting medium, utilized by forty-three percent of daily working commuters nationwide.

The statistical report documented that average monthly commuter expenditures stand at 1,044 rupees in urban centers, with substantial regional variations depending on transit coverage and road infrastructure quality. Urban planning researchers noted that limited feeder bus connectivity, overcrowding on existing rapid rail corridors, and prolonged transit durations often compel working professionals to purchase personal motorized vehicles despite rising fuel expenses.

Transport economists and environmental advocates emphasized that expanding modern bus rapid transit fleets and integrating multi-modal suburban transit networks are indispensable for alleviating choking metropolitan road congestion and urban vehicular emissions. The survey findings are set to guide national budgetary allocations for urban transit electrification schemes under smart city development masterplans.
