IMD issues severe weather warnings for 14 states as Western Disturbance stalls monsoon departure

The India Meteorological Department issued yellow and orange weather warnings across fourteen states and Union Territories, forecasting widespread thunderstorms, lightning, and intense downpours over the next four days. Weather scientists reported that an active Western Disturbance interacting with easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal has stalled the seasonal withdrawal of the southwest monsoon across northern and eastern India.

Meteorological alerts cautioned residents across Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Sikkim, and parts of Bihar against localized flash flooding, waterlogging in urban lowlands, and landslides along vulnerable Himalayan highways. Coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh are also expected to experience squally winds reaching speeds of fifty kilometers per hour, prompting advisory warnings for fishermen to avoid deep-sea operations.

State disaster management authorities placed emergency relief battalions on alert, advising district administrations to monitor river water levels and clear drainage bottlenecks in urban centers. Agriculture experts cautioned that unseasonal rainfall during the harvesting window could damage standing paddy and soybean crops across central agrarian belts.
