Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the central government will release a comprehensive national consultation paper on artificial intelligence governance and regulation within the month. Speaking at an international digital symposium in New Delhi, the minister indicated that the draft policy will seek public and industry feedback on implementing mandatory digital watermarking for synthetic media, liability standards for AI platform developers, and algorithmic transparency.
Vaishnaw emphasized that India’s regulatory philosophy balances technological innovation with ethical safeguards, avoiding overly restrictive bureaucratic hurdles while ensuring strong protections against biometric deepfakes, financial fraud, and non-consensual synthetic imagery. The policy paper will propose statutory protocols requiring generative AI developers to embed cryptographic provenance metadata in AI-generated audiovisual content.
Industry stakeholders, cybersecurity experts, and legal academics welcomed the consultative roadmap, pointing out that clear regulatory definitions will provide business certainty for domestic artificial intelligence startups. The Ministry confirmed that a sixty-day public feedback window will follow the release of the consultation document before statutory rules are finalized.
