Pentagon Awards $500 Million Counter-Drone Contract to Perennial Autonomy

The Pentagon awarded a $500 million contract to California-based startup Perennial Autonomy to accelerate development of its counter-drone technology platform. The deal ranks among the larger recent defense awards focused on neutralizing unmanned aerial threats in contested airspace.

Perennial Autonomy specializes in autonomous systems that detect, track, and intercept hostile drones using sensor fusion and rapid response algorithms. Military demand for such capabilities has grown alongside proliferating drone use in modern conflicts.

Contract funding will support testing, production scaling, and integration with existing command-and-control networks used by US forces. Defense officials have prioritized counter-UAS programs after battlefield lessons demonstrated cheap drones can disrupt high-value assets.

For the startup, the award validates a technology niche that attracts both venture capital and federal procurement. Delivery timelines and performance benchmarks will be watched closely as other contractors compete for follow-on orders in a rapidly expanding segment of the defense budget.
