Chennai airport slips to sixth spot in passenger traffic

Stakeholders responded on June 1, 2026 after Chennai slipped to sixth place by April passenger volumes. Chennai International Airport ranked sixth nationally by passenger traffic in April 2026, behind Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose airport.

Related filings and briefings added that chennai handled about 17.3 lakh passengers in April versus Kolkata’s 17.6 lakh, according to Airports Authority of India figures cited in reports.

Parallel announcements clarified that bengaluru remained the third-busiest airport overall and overtook Mumbai for domestic traffic in April with about 31.7 lakh domestic passengers.

Subsequent updates explained that airport officials attributed part of Chennai’s slower growth to cancelled flights linked to higher jet fuel prices and pending terminal expansion work.

Separately, delhi and Mumbai remain the busiest airports nationally; Hyderabad ranks fourth ahead of Chennai and Kolkata.

In addition, passenger groups in Chennai continued to press for expediting the greenfield Parandur airport project.

Next procedural dates were not immediately revised in the initial statements.
