First sighting of yellow-throated marten recorded in Kaziranga

Assam Forest Department officials said on June 2, 2026, that Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve recorded its first confirmed photographic sighting of a yellow-throated marten (Martes flavigula).

The image came from routine camera trapping by the Kaziranga Tiger Cell in semi-evergreen forest patches within the 1,302 square kilometre UNESCO World Heritage Site. The species is listed under Schedule II of India’s Wildlife Protection Act.

The marten is a diurnal, tree-climbing mesopredator found across the Himalayas and northeastern India. Conservation officials said the record adds to understanding of carnivore diversity beyond Kaziranga’s flagship rhino, tiger and elephant populations.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the sighting as evidence of habitat protection supporting broader ecosystem health. Wildlife experts noted the animal’s role in prey regulation and seed dispersal in forested areas of the park.
