Bolide explosion heard over Boston

Residents across New England reported a loud boom on May 30, 2026, later attributed to a daytime bolide—a bright meteor that broke apart in the atmosphere.

NASA said updated analysis indicated the object was about five feet wide with a mass of roughly 5.6 metric tons when it entered the atmosphere over southern New Hampshire at about 42,000 miles per hour. It travelled about 26 miles before fragmenting at an altitude near 31 miles.

The breakup released energy estimated at about 230 tons of TNT, producing a sonic boom heard across Massachusetts and neighbouring states. NASA said meteorite fragments likely fell into Cape Cod Bay in water roughly 100 feet deep.

The American Meteor Society received dozens of fireball reports from multiple U.S. states and parts of Canada. Massachusetts State Police said there were no known fire or medical emergencies linked to the event. NASA has not announced plans to recover material from the bay.
