India Modi Becomes Country Longest-Serving Continuously Elected PM in Coming Days

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to surpass Jawaharlal Nehru’s record as India’s longest-serving continuously elected prime minister in the coming days.

Modi first became prime minister in May 2014 after the BJP won a parliamentary majority. He retained office following victories in 2019 and 2024, accumulating uninterrupted tenure as an elected head of government.

Nehru served as India’s first prime minister from 1947 until his death in 1964, but Modi’s continuously elected streak — without appointment through succession or coalition breakdown — will exceed Nehru’s span under that specific measure.

The milestone coincides with the BJP’s 12-year anniversary campaign featuring Viksit Bharat Sankalp conventions across districts through June 21. Party leaders plan to highlight governance achievements during Modi’s tenure.

Modi’s longevity in office places him among the most enduring democratically elected leaders in India’s history.
