‘Trafficked’ from Thailand to Laos, two Gujarat sisters return home 18 months later

Two sisters from Gujarat returned home this week after roughly 18 months in captivity that began when traffickers lured them from Thailand into Laos, Indian officials said Friday.

The rescue, coordinated under Operation Mahisagar, involved Indian and foreign agencies tracking the women through brothel networks operating along the Mekong corridor.

Relatives in Anand district said the sisters departed for what they believed was legitimate overseas work before contacts went silent within weeks.

Diplomats secured their exit from Lao custody and arranged repatriation flights after brothel operators were identified through financial and travel records.

Anti-trafficking counselors will interview the survivors to build prosecutions against recruiters who targeted the pair on social media.

The case adds to a growing file of Indian nationals moved through Southeast Asian transit hubs under false job promises.

Gujarat police said Operation Mahisagar will remain active to intercept recruiters who target women with fraudulent hospitality contracts in Bangkok and Vientiane.
