Canada announces new Russia sanctions after Carney-Zelensky talks

Canada announced a new package of sanctions targeting Russian entities on June 16, 2026, following bilateral talks between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the G7 summit in Evian.

The measures target individuals and organizations assessed to be sustaining Russia’s military financing and logistics networks. Ottawa said the sanctions were coordinated with existing G7 designations to close gaps that Russian actors had previously exploited.

Carney and Zelensky met on the summit’s sidelines to review Canada’s ongoing defense contributions and discuss long-term reconstruction commitments. Canadian officials indicated further support packages were under internal review.

The announcement reinforced Canada’s position as an active participant in the Western sanctions coalition despite its own domestic economic pressures. Ukrainian officials welcomed the move, though they have consistently argued that financial restrictions alone cannot substitute for direct military support.
