Xi Jinping holds talks with Myanmar’s president in Beijing

Chinese President Xi Jinping met Myanmar’s President Min Aung Hlaing in Beijing on June 16, 2026, during a formal state visit aimed at reinforcing bilateral ties amid Myanmar’s prolonged internal conflict.

The two leaders reviewed cooperation across infrastructure, energy and trade corridors central to China’s Belt and Road projects running through Myanmar. Beijing has continued engaging with Naypyidaw despite international criticism of the military government’s conduct since the 2021 coup.

No public statement addressed specific milestones in the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, though officials from both sides indicated discussions were substantive. China has economic interests in multiple pipeline and port projects that require stable governance along the route.

Human rights organizations monitoring the meeting argued that high-level Chinese engagement provided political cover to a government accused of serious abuses against civilian populations. Beijing has consistently described its relationship with Myanmar as non-interference in sovereign internal affairs.
