Government Re-Issues Draft Notification for 56000 Sq Km Western Ghats Eco-Sensitive Area

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change re-issued a draft notification declaring over 56,000 square kilometers across six states in the Western Ghats as an Eco-Sensitive Area (ESA).

The revised notification mandates strict restrictions on mining, large-scale construction, and polluting industrial projects while safeguarding traditional agricultural and local community livelihoods across the biodiversity hotspot.

State governments and public stakeholders have been given 60 days to submit final observations before the ESA framework is formalized.
