Police fatally shoot knife-wielding attacker after fatal stabbing near Times Square precinct

New York City Police Department officers fatally shot an armed woman after she fatally stabbed a pedestrian and injured another in broad daylight near One Times Square in midtown Manhattan.

On-duty patrol officers assigned to the transit precinct responded within seconds after the woman attacked a female pedestrian with a large kitchen knife in the crowded pedestrian plaza. Responding officers drew service weapons and issued repeated verbal commands directing the assailant to drop the weapon. When the suspect advanced toward officers and surrounding pedestrians with the knife raised, officers discharged their firearms, neutralizing the attacker at the scene.

Emergency medical personnel arrived promptly, transporting the stabbing victim to a nearby medical center where she succumbed to critical injuries. A secondary victim who sustained superficial defensive lacerations received immediate treatment at the scene and was reported in stable condition.

Detectives cordoned off surrounding pedestrian corridors to collect physical evidence and review surveillance camera footage. Police officials commended the rapid tactical intervention of patrol officers, which prevented further casualties in the high-density tourist corridor.

The NYPD Force Investigation Division launched a standard procedural review into the discharge of service weapons, while transit police units augmented foot patrols throughout the 42nd Street subway complex and adjoining pedestrian thoroughfares. Municipal authorities praised the swift intervention of patrol officers, noting that rapid response protocols established across midtown transit zones prevented wider panic in one of the city’s most congested public spaces.
