Microsoft abandons UK data center project with Nscale in Essex amid power supply delays

Technology giant Microsoft officially abandoned plans to co-develop a massive artificial intelligence data center complex in Loughton, Essex alongside British specialized cloud infrastructure provider Nscale. The unexpected withdrawal followed formal notifications from regional electricity grid operators projecting that necessary high-voltage grid connections could not be energized until the mid-2030s due to severe transmission bottlenecks.

The cancelled multimillion-pound project was slated to house thousands of advanced liquid-cooled GPU clusters designed to power next-generation sovereign artificial intelligence workloads and cloud services across the United Kingdom. Infrastructure analysts pointed out that Britain’s aging distribution grids and protracted substation connection queues have emerged as critical hurdles threatening the country’s ambitions to become a preeminent global AI hub.

Tech industry leaders expressed frustration over recurring infrastructure delays, urging British regulatory authorities to streamline transmission grid upgrades and prioritize power allocations for strategic computing clusters. Microsoft stated that it remains committed to expanding European digital infrastructure, redirecting capital expenditure toward alternative regional sites with ready access to high-capacity renewable power.
