Punjab Police arrest naturalized US citizen in Jalandhar wanted by FBI in $600,000 wire fraud

In a coordinated international law enforcement operation, Punjab Police apprehended a naturalized United States citizen in Jalandhar on Sunday who was actively sought by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for orchestrating a $600,000 wire fraud and cyber extortion scheme.

The arrested fugitive, identified as forty-two-year-old Harpreet Singh, had been the subject of an Interpol Red Notice and carried an international reward of $150,000 announced by American judicial authorities. Acting on actionable intelligence relayed through the Central Bureau of Investigation—India’s designated Interpol National Central Bureau—counter-intelligence detectives raided a luxury residential farmhouse in Jalandhar’s Model Town suburb.

Investigators revealed that the suspect had fled California in late 2023 after being indicted by a federal grand jury for operating sophisticated business email compromise frauds targeting healthcare organizations and real estate escrow accounts. He had been residing in Punjab under assumed identities, investing illicit digital wire transfers into local commercial properties and hospitality businesses.

Police seized multiple fraudulent international passports, encrypted laptops, satellite mobile communication handsets, and financial ledger documents during the cordon-and-search operation. The accused was produced before a designated judicial magistrate in Jalandhar and remanded to transit judicial custody pending formal extradition hearings in New Delhi.

Ministry of External Affairs officials confirmed that the United States Department of Justice has formally submitted an extradition requisition under the bilateral India-US Extradition Treaty. Senior police officers highlighted the arrest as a testament to seamless multilateral intelligence coordination against transnational white-collar criminal syndicates.
