Delhi government suspends five MCD engineers and officials following preliminary hostel collapse inquiry

The Delhi government on Tuesday placed five engineering officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi under immediate administrative suspension after an interim fact-finding inquiry uncovered gross administrative negligence connected to the fatal Satya Niketan hostel collapse.

Those penalized include the Najafgarh zone executive engineer, an assistant engineer, two junior field engineers, and an administrative zoning superintendent. The preliminary report compiled by the Directorate of Vigilance documented that repeated public grievances detailing illegal basement underpinning at the property were systematically closed without on-site structural evaluations.

Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj announced that a specialized three-member technical inquiry commission headed by the Principal Secretary of Public Works has been granted ten days to determine criminal liability among supervisory staff. Bharadwaj emphasized that civic engineers who greenlight unlawful multi-storey modifications through fraudulent occupancy certifications will face formal dismissal and police prosecution.

The suspension order comes alongside a comprehensive directive commanding all municipal zonal commissioners to initiate door-to-door structural soundness verifications across Karol Bagh, Mukherjee Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, and Satya Niketan. Municipal authorities confirmed that civic teams have started sealing dozens of unapproved commercial boarding rooms operating along congested arterial alleys.
