Trump administration expands sanctions on Iranian aviation sector, targeting over two dozen airlines

The Trump administration imposed comprehensive new economic sanctions on Tuesday targeting more than two dozen Iranian commercial airlines, cargo handlers, and aerospace procurement networks in an effort to throttle Tehran’s international transport corridors.

The punitive actions, announced by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, designate prominent commercial passenger carriers alongside regional cargo operators accused of transferring unmanned aerial systems and military equipment to regional proxy groups. The sanctions freeze all property of designated entities within U.S. jurisdictions and prohibit foreign financial institutions from facilitating aviation fueling or maintenance services.

Treasury officials stated that the measures aim to sever supply routes used by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to support militant operations across Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen. Secondary sanctions will apply to international aviation service firms, maintenance providers, and insurance syndicates that continue commercial arrangements with the blacklisted carriers.

Iranian authorities condemned the expanded restrictions, labeling them an act of economic piracy that imperils civilian aviation safety. Commercial aviation analysts noted that the move will severely complicate international flights and accelerate the isolation of Iran’s civil aerospace industry.
