The United States National Science Foundation and the Indian Department of Science and Technology formally inaugurated the bilateral TRUST Fellowship program during an academic conference in Bengaluru on Friday, cementing institutional research ties in advanced microelectronics.
The joint bilateral initiative will fully fund doctoral candidates and postdoctoral fellows from premier institutions in both countries to undertake intensive cooperative research in next-generation semiconductor fabrication, hardware cryptography, quantum materials, and edge-AI chip architectures. The fellowship aims to foster secure, allied supply chains for mission-critical microprocessors while mitigating global dependencies on geographically concentrated chip foundries.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, representatives from leading multinational chip manufacturers and top university deans emphasized that hands-on cleanroom access and shared intellectual property frameworks will cultivate elite engineering talent. Participating fellows will divide their research residencies between premier facilities in Bengaluru and leading university cleanrooms across the United States.
