Mother elephant rescues month-old calf from raging Kosi River torrents in Uttarakhand

Spectacular field video captured by wildlife surveillance cameras near Jim Corbett National Park recorded the dramatic rescue of a month-old elephant calf by its protective mother along the swollen banks of the Kosi River on Sunday. The newborn calf had slipped into turbulent rapids while an elephant herd was traversing an established forest migration corridor following torrential monsoon downpours.

As the swift current swept the struggling calf downstream toward deep river boulders, the adult cow plunged courageously into the raging riverbed. Utilizing her trunk and forelegs, she anchored herself against the powerful water surge and systematically guided the young calf toward a shallow sandbar, where other herd matriarchs formed a protective barrier to escort the pair up a steep embankment.

State forest department officials monitoring the corridor reported that both mother and calf rejoined their wild herd in healthy condition without requiring veterinary intervention. Forest field teams credited unfragmented riparian buffer zones for enabling natural wildlife movements, while stepping up anti-poaching patrols along elevated monsoon river crossings.
