NHAI rolls out automated barrier-free GNSS electronic tolling along Tambaram-Tindivanam corridor

The National Highways Authority of India commenced full operational deployment of its automated, barrier-free Global Navigation Satellite System electronic toll collection technology along the busy Tambaram-Tindivanam corridor of National Highway 32 in Tamil Nadu. The innovative satellite-based tolling framework completely eliminates traditional physical toll plaza boom barriers, allowing equipped vehicles to cruise at highway speeds while toll fees are deducted automatically.

The technological architecture utilizes vehicle-mounted onboard satellite units paired with virtual geo-fenced highway segments to record the exact travel distance traversed by each vehicle. Specialized high-resolution automated number-plate recognition cameras mounted on highway gantries provide auxiliary verification to ensure seamless toll audit reconciliation and prevent unauthorized vehicular evasion.

Highway users and transport logistics operators reported dramatic travel time reductions along the corridor, noting that eliminating toll plaza queues cuts fuel wastage and optimizes freight movement between Chennai and southern industrial hubs. Highway engineers confirmed that successful performance data gathered from this flagship deployment will inform the nationwide rollout of satellite tolling across high-density national corridors.
