Project Cheetah achieved a momentous operational milestone on Sunday as wildlife biologists formally released a three-year-old male cheetah translocated from Botswana into a large predator-proof acclimatization enclosure within Madhya Pradesh’s Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary. The translocation establishes India’s second dedicated sanctuary for the spotted felines, easing demographic pressure on Kuno National Park.
The sprawling 64-square-kilometer fenced enclosure features extensive savannah grasslands, artificial waterholes, and an abundant prey base comprising chital, blackbuck, and wild boar. Veterinarians confirmed that the feline completed mandatory quarantine protocols in quarantine bomas with excellent physiological indicators and is hunting successfully in semi-wild conditions.
Wildlife conservation authorities announced plans to introduce two additional female cheetahs from African source populations over the coming month to catalyze captive breeding pairs. Environmental researchers underscored that developing decentralized regional habitats is essential for establishing genetically viable, self-sustaining populations of free-ranging cheetahs across central India’s historic grassland range.
