Digi Yatra Begins International Passenger Trials at Seven Airports

India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation announced the commencement of international passenger biometric boarding trials under the Digi Yatra initiative across seven major international airports nationwide. Beginning November 1, international travelers holding biometric e-passports and flying on national carriers Air India and IndiGo can experience seamless, paperless airport transit across major hubs including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, Chennai, and Amritsar. The facial-recognition technology allows passengers to validate identity and clear departure gates without presenting physical boarding passes.

Aviation authorities confirmed that the international trial integrates advanced cryptographic security protocols that validate passenger passport data against national immigration databases while maintaining strict personal data privacy. Under the system’s privacy architecture, biometric credentials are encrypted and stored locally on the passenger’s smartphone rather than central cloud repositories, purging local gate data within hours of flight departure. Civil aviation officials stated that expanding biometric facial processing to international routes will dramatically curtail airport congestion and shorten international security queue times.
