UIDAI launches 5 new citizen tech initiatives including Face Authentication for ePDS on 17th Aadhaar Day

The Unique Identification Authority of India marked its seventeenth Aadhaar Day by unveiling five major citizen-centric technological initiatives during a national digital identity convention in Kolkata. Foremost among the deployed upgrades is the nationwide rollout of AI-assisted Face Authentication technology tailored for the electronic Public Distribution System, enabling seamless, contactless biometric verification for foodgrain beneficiaries.

The enhanced facial recognition modality addresses longstanding authentication challenges faced by elderly citizens, manual laborers, and rural beneficiaries whose fingerprint ridges frequently suffer wear and tear from arduous manual labor. Operating securely through standard smartphones and point-of-sale tablets without requiring expensive specialized scanning hardware, the application verifies identity against encrypted central databases in milliseconds.

Additional initiatives launched during the celebration included lightweight verification frameworks for regional financial institutions, enhanced digital consent dashboards for mobile users, and refreshed token management systems that prevent credential misuse. Technical experts praised the authority’s continued focus on algorithmic inclusivity, highlighting that adaptive biometric technologies ensure social welfare reaches the most vulnerable citizens without systemic exclusion.
