Canadian author Anne Carson awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature

The Swedish Academy announced in Stockholm that Canadian poet, essayist, and classical translator Anne Carson has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel committee commended Carson for her luminous body of work that dissolves the boundaries between classical scholarship, poetry, and modern philosophy, reinventing aesthetic forms to address grief, desire, and human vulnerability.

Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson established an international reputation with landmark works including Autobiography of Red, Eros the Bittersweet, and Nox. Her unique hybrid style seamlessly merges ancient Greek verse from Euripides and Sappho with fragmented contemporary verse and visual art, establishing her as one of the most intellectually daring stylists in modern English prose and poetry.

Literary critics and cultural institutions worldwide celebrated the decision as a profound endorsement of innovative translation and structural experimentation. Carson becomes the third Canadian-born writer to receive literature’s highest global honour, following Saul Bellow and Alice Munro, cementing her status as an enduring luminary of global literary culture.
