Google.org to help 1 million farmers via ONA by 2027

Google.org has committed $2.5 million in philanthropic grant funding to advance the World Bank Group’s AgriConnect program, which focuses on developing open, artificial intelligence-enabled digital networks for global farming communities. The initiative aims to extend critical agricultural services to approximately 1 million smallholder farmers by 2027 through the Open Network for Agriculture, establishing shared digital public infrastructure across developing agricultural centers.

The network architecture integrates localized weather forecasting, agronomic advice, soil fertility data, and real-time market pricing through standardized open interfaces. By reducing technical barriers for regional software providers, cooperatives, and agritech ventures, the platform assists smallholders in optimizing input usage, increasing crop yields, and mitigating climate risks. The joint effort underscores how interoperable data standards can connect underserved rural producers to formal markets, logistics networks, and agricultural financing, fostering sustainable food security across the Global South. Through continued philanthropic backing, the initiative seeks to establish sustainable digital frameworks that empower small-scale agricultural producers against unpredictable weather disruptions.
