Guatemalan national pleads guilty to conspiracy to commit narcotics trafficking

A 51-year-old Guatemalan national, Donelfert Monterroso Vasquez, pleaded guilty in federal court in the Eastern District of Virginia to international conspiracy charges involving the smuggling of massive quantities of cocaine into the United States. Court records show that Monterroso Vasquez conspired with transnational maritime smuggling syndicates to coordinate maritime vessels, clandestine refueling stops, and overland distribution routes designed to transport more than 450 kilograms of cocaine across Central America and into American domestic markets.

Following an extensive multinational investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Special Operations Division and foreign law enforcement partners, Monterroso Vasquez was apprehended abroad and extradited to the United States to face trial. During his plea hearing before a federal magistrate judge, the defendant admitted to organizing logistics, security, and payments for cocaine shipments. He faces a mandatory minimum penalty of ten years in prison and a potential maximum sentence of life imprisonment when formally sentenced by the district court.
