Theni jailbreak: Human error led to escape of prisoners, says DGP Prisons

Tamil Nadu Director General of Police for Prisons Sandeep Rai Rathore announced that human error and procedural security violations directly enabled the escape of 17 inmates from the district sub-jail in Theni. Addressing reporters following an on-site inspection, Rathore explained that prison staff violated standard operating protocols when they unlocked interior barrack doors after an inmate feigned an acute epileptic seizure, allowing remand prisoners to overpower guards and flee the facility.

Special police tracking squads and forensic teams were deployed across southern Tamil Nadu and adjacent state border crossings to apprehend the fugitives, resulting in the recapture of several escaped prisoners within hours of the jailbreak. Prison administration officials initiated disciplinary inquiries against negligent duty staff, while technical teams began upgrading biometric surveillance systems, emergency sirens, and perimeter physical barriers across district detention facilities to prevent recurrence of similar containment breaches.
