A viral video claiming to document individuals aboard small boats scooping dozens of packaged Apple smartphone boxes from the waters of the Strait of Hormuz amassed millions of views across online video platforms. Accompanying posts claimed that a maritime shipping container carrying commercial cargo had ruptured in the busy waterway. Fact-checking organization Full Fact examined the footage to evaluate its authenticity, deploying advanced forensic detection software alongside physical consistency checks.
Analysts submitted the media file to Google’s SynthID detection tool, which identified statistical signatures characteristic of generative artificial intelligence synthesis. Visual scrutiny further uncovered glaring physical abnormalities, such as impossible fluid dynamics where water failed to splash around submerged objects, unnatural hand geometry among the figures, and floating cardboard packaging that remained entirely unaffected by moisture. Full Fact concluded that the clip was an artificial creation rather than a genuine maritime recovery event, cautioning users regarding the rise of synthetic consumer spectacle videos.
