E-cigarettes help smokers quit even without specialist support

A randomized clinical trial published in the medical journal NEJM Evidence demonstrated that providing e-cigarettes to adult cigarette smokers effectively facilitates smoking cessation, even when dispensed in pragmatic settings without specialized behavioral counseling. Conducted across diverse community populations, the study investigated whether access to electronic nicotine delivery systems alone could produce sustained abstinence from traditional combustible cigarettes.

Trial participants assigned to receive e-cigarette starter kits achieved significantly higher biochemically verified continuous smoking abstinence rates at six-month follow-up compared to participants provided with standard nicotine replacement therapies or educational literature. The researchers noted that while behavioral counseling remains beneficial, the availability of satisfying alternative nicotine delivery devices provides substantial public health value by helping individuals overcome physical nicotine cravings independently. The authors stressed that these findings provide valuable empirical support for harm-reduction strategies in national tobacco control programs.
