GST mop-up grows 23% to over ₹2.31 lakh cr. in October

India’s gross Goods and Services Tax revenue demonstrated substantial economic momentum in October, surging 23 percent year-on-year to surpass 2.31 lakh crore rupees, according to official data released by the Ministry of Finance. The impressive fiscal milestone was propelled by a 16 percent expansion in domestic transactional tax collections, bolstered by robust festive consumer retail spending and heightened business activity ahead of major national holidays. Concurrently, tax receipts generated from international goods imports experienced an exceptional 42 percent surge, underscoring resilient industrial import demand across key manufacturing sectors.

Revenue officials highlighted that sustained compliance enforcement, digital invoice matching, and tightened anti-evasion audits contributed significantly to the revenue milestone. The monthly revenue haul represents one of the strongest collection figures since the implementation of the indirect tax regime in 2017, providing the central government with enhanced fiscal headroom for infrastructure capital expenditure. Economic analysts noted that the strong tax intake reflects underlying macroeconomic stability and expanding formalization across retail, logistics, and industrial supply chains throughout the country.
