Bolivia declares state of emergency over El Nino weather pattern

The government of Bolivia issued an official supreme decree declaring a nationwide state of emergency in response to devastating drought conditions induced by the severe El Niño meteorological phenomenon. Official disaster assessment data released by civil defense authorities revealed that acute water shortages and parched soils have impacted more than 78,000 rural families across six major administrative departments. The prolonged absence of seasonal precipitation has decimated indigenous agricultural crops, drained critical irrigation reservoirs, and caused the death of more than 75,000 head of cattle.

Under the national emergency declaration, the central administration unlocked emergency contingency funding to dispatch potable water tankers, mobile water purification units, and veterinary medicine supplies to drought-stricken farming cooperatives. Agronomists and municipal officials in the Gran Chaco and Altiplano regions warned that groundwater tables have receded to critical lows, imperiling the survival of staple maize and potato harvests. International humanitarian agencies mobilized logistical support to assist Bolivian rural communities, calling for coordinated continental climate adaptation investments to protect vulnerable Andean populations from intensifying climatic extremes.
