Iran Reviewing Latest US Peace Proposal as Hard-line General Plays Key Role in Talks

Iran is reviewing the latest U.S. peace proposal as a hard-line general has emerged as a central figure in the nuclear negotiations, according to sources familiar with the talks. Tehran submitted its most recent offer to Washington earlier this week, though Iranian descriptions suggest it largely repeats terms Trump previously rejected.

Foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said differences between the sides remain deep and significant. He indicated that nuclear issues were not currently being discussed in detail and that Washington’s focus on highly enriched uranium inside Iran was a barrier to agreement. Iran maintains its program is for peaceful purposes.

President Donald Trump has insisted that Iran’s stockpile of near-weapons-grade uranium must be removed from the country. He said this week the U.S. would eventually recover the material. Hard-line elements within Iran’s security establishment have publicly opposed concessions on enrichment and missile capabilities.

Mediation efforts involving Pakistan, Qatar and Oman have accelerated as Trump warns his patience is running thin. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reported slight progress but said a deal is not yet within reach. The war began with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Feb. 28 and a ceasefire was declared in mid-April with key objectives unmet.

Iran’s descriptions of its latest offer suggest it largely repeats terms Trump previously rejected, including demands for control of the Strait of Hormuz. A source close to Iran’s negotiating team told Tasnim news agency that agreement will only be signed when all issues are resolved.
