Kamal Haasan Backs PM Modi’s Energy Conservation Call Saying National Responsibility Above Party Politics

Tamil Nadu actor-politician Kamal Haasan publicly backed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for energy conservation, saying national responsibility must rise above party politics. Haasan, who leads the Makkal Needhi Maiam party and serves in the Rajya Sabha, posted a four-minute video on social media Friday urging citizens to reduce fuel consumption.

Modi had called on Indians to adopt lifestyle changes including using public transport and avoiding unnecessary travel as the Iran war disrupts the Strait of Hormuz and raises global energy prices. Haasan cited historical examples of national sacrifice during the 1962 China war and 1965 food shortage under Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Haasan also praised the government’s expansion of solar and wind energy capacity over the past decade. He urged Modi to convene a summit of all chief ministers to coordinate fuel tax reductions and lower public transport fares so citizens are not alone in bearing economic pressure.

He said roughly 60 countries have imposed energy-saving measures following the conflict. Haasan described himself as a centrist willing to acknowledge good policy regardless of political alliances. His support drew attention across party lines in Tamil Nadu, where he has contested state elections against both the DMK and AIADMK.

Haasan proposed reducing state VAT on petrol and diesel and cutting metro and train fares so citizens can shift away from private vehicles. He referenced PM Modi’s appeal for Indians to prepare for a year of energy-saving measures as the Iran conflict disrupts sea trade routes and raises kitchen costs.
