BJP Retains Assam for Third Consecutive Term in 2026 State Elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance has secured a third consecutive term in Assam, with the BJP alone winning 82 of the 126 assembly seats in the April-May 2026 state elections.

Allies Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front won 10 seats each, taking the NDA tally to 102 and giving the alliance a comfortable three-fourths majority. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in for a second straight term on May 12 after being unanimously elected NDA legislature party leader.

The BJP crossed the majority mark on its own for the first time in Assam, up from 60 seats in 2021. The Indian National Congress won 19 seats, its worst performance since losing power to the BJP in 2016. Voter turnout reached 85.64 percent, higher than the 82.42 percent recorded in the previous election.

Sarma credited welfare programs including cash transfers to women and a revised electoral map for the result. The outcome makes the NDA the only non-Congress dispensation to govern Assam for three consecutive terms, cementing the state’s shift from a Congress stronghold to a BJP bastion in the northeast.

Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in for a second consecutive term on May 12 at Guwahati. The election recorded 85.64 percent turnout, up from 82.42 percent in 2021. Sarma joined the BJP in 2015 after leaving the Congress party, where he had served as a minister under three terms of Tarun Gogoi.
