Kerala Left Democratic Front Outcome Awaited as State Assembly Results Finalised

Kerala’s 2026 assembly election results delivered a decisive shift in the state’s political landscape, with the Congress-led United Democratic Front sweeping back to power after a decade of Left Democratic Front rule.

The UDF won 102 of 140 seats, while the ruling LDF secured 35. The Indian National Congress alone captured 63 constituencies, the Indian Union Muslim League won 22 and the Kerala Congress took seven. Counting concluded on May 4 after voting across the state.

Outgoing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan won his Dharmadam seat, but the LDF could not overcome broader anti-incumbency against its 10-year government. The BJP won three seats, including Nemom where state party president Rajeev Chandrasekhar prevailed, while its vote share remained largely flat at about 11.4 percent.

The Congress increased its vote share from 25.1 percent in 2021 to 28.8 percent, while the CPI(M) share fell from 25.4 percent to 21.8 percent. The result marks a generational transition in Kerala politics, with leadership now centered on figures such as opposition leader V.D. Satheesan rather than veterans of prior decades.

Former Union Minister V. Muraleedharan defeated incumbent V. Sivankutty by a narrow margin in Kazhakootam. The BJP’s three-seat tally included wins in Nemom and Chathannoor. The result ends the Left Front’s decade-long governance and restores the UDF to power without relying on veterans such as Oommen Chandy.
