Report: UPI transactions hit record high of ₹29.9 lakh crore in May

Reports on June 1, 2026 outlined developments that digital payment rails set fresh volume and value records in May. Unified Payments Interface transactions reached a monthly record in May 2026, NPCI data showed.

In addition, the network processed 23.2 billion transactions worth ₹29.9 lakh crore in May.

The same reports noted that volume rose about 4% from April’s 22.35 billion transactions; value climbed about 3% from ₹29.03 lakh crore.

Authorities also said payment industry executives linked the surge partly to summer travel, IPL 2026 spending and seasonal retail activity.

Further context from the day indicated year-on-year UPI value rose about 19% from ₹25.14 lakh crore in May 2025.

Related filings and briefings added that average daily transaction value in May was about ₹96,465 crore, according to NPCI-derived averages cited in trade press.

Parallel announcements clarified that cross-border UPI is live in more than eight jurisdictions including the UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal and Mauritius.

Subsequent updates explained that credit-on-UPI remains in early stages but is cited by payment executives as a potential next volume driver.

Observers will watch whether follow-up orders alter the current framework.
