UK CMA Requires Google to Give Publishers More Control Over AI Search Features

Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority ordered Google to give publishers greater control over how their content appears in AI-generated search results.

Publishers may now opt out of having their material included in AI summaries and responses produced by Google’s search features. The CMA acted amid concerns that AI search tools display publisher content without adequate compensation or consent mechanisms.

Google operates the dominant search engine in the United Kingdom and has integrated generative AI into results pages. News organisations and content creators argued that AI summaries reduce traffic to their websites by answering queries directly within search results.

The CMA’s order requires Google to implement opt-out tools that publishers can use to exclude their content from AI features while remaining indexed for traditional search listings.

The decision adds to regulatory pressure on technology platforms over the use of third-party content to train and operate AI systems.
