How Japan Is Preparing for Extreme Heat of Summer 2026 with Heatwave Response Plans

Japanese authorities have rolled out an expanded package of heatwave preparedness measures ahead of a summer that forecasters say could bring record-breaking temperatures across much of the archipelago in 2026.

The government is upgrading cooling infrastructure at transit hubs, schools and senior care facilities while expanding public guidance on hydration, outdoor work limits and emergency medical access during extreme heat events.

Health officials said hospitals in major cities are pre-positioning additional capacity for heatstroke cases, and municipal governments are opening extended cooling centers in neighborhoods with limited air conditioning.

Infrastructure planners are also accelerating shade installations and reflective paving projects in dense urban districts where the urban heat island effect magnifies daytime highs, officials said Thursday.
