Landmark Supreme Court Panel Formed to Develop Sensitivity Guidelines for Courts in Sexual Offence Cases

The Supreme Court constituted an expert committee to draft sensitivity guidelines for trial courts handling sexual offence cases, aiming to reduce retraumatization of survivors during testimony and cross-examination.

The panel includes judges, prosecutors, defense counsel, psychologists and victim-support NGOs tasked with producing model directions on courtroom demeanor, media restrictions and interim protection orders.

Women’s rights groups have long argued that aggressive questioning and public identification deter reporting, even after substantive rape law reforms.

The court asked the committee to submit recommendations within a fixed timeline so high courts can adapt training modules for judicial officers and court staff nationwide.
