State Police of Rhode Island arrest West Warwick resident for operating without interlock system

Rhode Island State Police arrested Kevin Decena De Los Santos of West Warwick on Saturday for operating a vehicle without a court-ordered ignition interlock device, troopers said.

The interlock requirement typically follows a drunken-driving conviction and prevents a car from starting when breath samples exceed legal alcohol limits.

Decena De Los Santos also faced charges tied to driving while his license remained suspended, according to the arrest affidavit filed with state court.

Troopers stopped the vehicle during a routine patrol after observing a registration violation, then confirmed the interlock mandate through motor-vehicle records.

Prosecutors said repeat violations can extend suspension periods and trigger jail time under Rhode Island traffic statutes.

The arrest underscores ongoing enforcement against drivers who bypass safety devices installed to reduce impaired-driving recidivism.
