Kerala launches free bus travel scheme for women

Kerala launched the Priyadarshini scheme on June 16, 2026, providing free travel on state-operated bus services to women and transgender persons across the state.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced the initiative as an effort to improve mobility for women in the workforce and reduce the financial burden on daily commuters who depend on public transport. Transgender persons were explicitly included in the scheme’s eligibility criteria.

State transport officials said the program would be funded through the government budget and implemented across the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation network. Passengers would receive passes or electronic tokens at issuing centers.

Women’s organizations welcomed the announcement, calling it a meaningful step toward economic inclusion. Some transport economists noted the scheme’s fiscal sustainability would depend on passenger volume growth and central government support for KSRTC’s broader financial position.
