Modi says last decade saw record infrastructure upgrades

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on June 16, 2026, that India had witnessed record levels of infrastructure expansion over the preceding decade, pointing to roads, railways, ports, airports and digital networks as evidence of transformational investment.

Speaking during the G7 summit period, Modi framed the infrastructure build-out as central to India’s economic growth trajectory and its capacity to attract manufacturing relocating from other regions. He highlighted the scale of construction as both an economic achievement and a foundation for future development.

Government data cited by Modi’s office points to sharp increases in national highway length, electrification of rural households and expansion of broadband connectivity. Opposition parties in India have questioned whether the benefits have been distributed equitably across states and income groups.

International observers broadly acknowledge the scale of India’s infrastructure investment while noting that quality, maintenance and environmental assessments of individual projects remain subjects of ongoing policy debate.
